Touch Screen Laptop
By Fredrick Joy
Laptop technology is one of the highly commendable technologies available in the modern world. The computer had
started its generation from vacuum tubes. It then underwent changes, and integrated circuits came into existence.
Microprocessors followed the ICs. Time flew by and today computer technology is moving towards Artificial
Intelligence -- the ability of the computer to think on its own. This awesome transition is highly laudable and the
transition of the computer from the size of a room to a device that can sit on the palm is a perfect paradigm for
the advancement of technology. Laptops are handy and easily portable. They can be moved from one place to another
with utmost ease. Even laptops have undergone evolution. They have become smaller, lighter and highly portable,
resulting in the birth of notebooks and even netbooks.
These notebooks and netbooks have now taken another bold leap forward and reached the next generation -- the
touch screen technology. Touch is something that can create magic! It can do wonders and hence it is highly
acknowledged. A mother's touch will make her child experience the warmth of her love. Feelings can be expressed
with a mere touch. A friend's gentle pat on the shoulder can be very reassuring and comforting during rough times.
In Greek mythology, Dionysus made King Midas' touch so powerful that it could turn anything into gold. Even plants
respond to touch. The Touch-me-not plant protects its moisture content from the atmosphere by closing its leaves
when touched. Thus, a touch can work miracles! And now, the essence of a touch is captured in the touchscreens of
laptops and notebooks. These laptops let people work with their fingertips or with devices like the stylus or the
touch-pen.
This technology is so sophisticated that even natural gestures can be used to perform operations on the laptops.
For example, if you want to increase font size, you just have to stretch your fingers apart on the screen. You can
move to the next page with just a single flip gesture on the screen. Similarly, dragging and dropping can be done
with fingers as well.
The mechanism behind this process is that the touches are equivalent to mouse clicks. The touch screen laptop is
integrated with three components -- the sensor, the converter and the software driver. The sensor will locate the
exact location of touch on the screen of the laptop. The converter helps in converting the touch signals into a
data format which is understood by the software driver. This driver helps to perform the necessary tasks.
Various methods are used to implement the touch screen effect and it involves either a mild electric current or
ultrasonic waves or infrared waves. A matrix of infrared rays is located on the screen and when you touch it,
infrared rays at that particular spot are blocked for some period of time. The light sensors will sense this and
the detector will send appropriate signals to the converter. The signals are transformed into data packets. These
packets are understood by the software driver and the required operation is performed. Ultrasonic waves follow the
same principle as the Infrared rays. In case of electric current, a thin sensor film is kept above two closely
packed electric plates. A touch will cause a change in the electric field. This is sensed by the sensor and the
process is carried out.
Touch screen laptops are becoming very popular these days. There are touchscreen tablets available in the market
too. Touchscreen devices usually carry a heavier price tag than the ones without touch capability. However, it is
worth spending a few extra bucks to enjoy the seamless functionality of Touch Screen Laptops.
